In our new weekly segment of “Murderous Music Video” we will focus on a music video that acts out like a short horror film. When Michael Jackson’s Thriller was released on MTV, it changed the way videos were made from that point on. There are still plenty of artists that focus on turning their song into a soundtrack for some pretty horrific stuff. Lucky for us, right?
In this Daniel Wolff directed video, we get a gritty throwback to 80’s slasher exploitation. It’s in the same vein as ‘Maniac’ with sensibilities of ‘American Psycho.’
Jake Gyllenhaal’s character is a serial killer that loves to kill people who dance. Basically, he is like the town from ‘Footloose ‘personified. He lives by routine. Workout, eat, go out, stalk, kill. No one enjoying themselves are safe.
The video begins with him sitting at a party snorting lines of cocaine. He sits there filling himself with hate at the sight of two young kids dancing. He disappears for a bit and comes back in fencing gear. At first the two kids laugh it off. That is until he slashes the girls face and throat. He chases the guy into the down the hall and things get real horrorshow.
The rest of the video, is him going through his day, working out, eating noodles and murdering people.
Gyllenhaal is no stranger to dark roles. His character’s in ‘Donnie Darko,’ ‘Nightcrawler’ and ‘Enemy’ all dance with demons.
