HBO has dropped a new trailer for their upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider, and from the looks of things, this is going to be on the must-see list.
When a young boy is killed in a small town in Oklahoma, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), whose fingerprints are all over the crime scene, is quickly accused of the murder. There’s only one problem. CCTV footage shows Terry was over 60 miles away when the murder occurred.
Local sheriff Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), stumped by the case, brings in private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) to aid in the investigation. As the investigation unfolds, everyone involved will be forced to answer the question of what is and isn’t real.
For King fans, you’ll note that Holly Gibney also appeared in his novel Mr. Mercedes and was previously played by Justine Lupe in an adaptation of that work.
Mare Winningham (American Horror Story) and Julianne Nicholson (August: Osage County) will also star in the series which was adapted from the novel by Richard Price (Sea of Love).
Early buzz for the series, which is set to debut on January 12, has been mostly positive, and King himself took to Twitter calling the show “one of the best adaptations of my work.”
The trailer, which appeared today, is intense, teasing just enough exposition to get us interested. Check it out below and look for the first two episodes of The Outsider on HBO on January 12, 2020 beginning at 9 pm EST.
