The first official trailer for Ratched, Ryan Murphy’s series based on the character of Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, landed this morning. It may be one of Sarah Paulson’s best performances to date.

The synopsis we received in a press release this morning reads:

From Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, RATCHED is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched (Paulson). In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.

If the trailer is any indication, this origin story is going to be intense!

Nurse Ratched was created by Ken Kesey in his 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. She first appeared on screen played by Louise Fletcher in the film adaptation of the novel directed by Milos Forman. Fletcher won an Oscar for her portrayal.

This deep dive into the origins of the character looks promising, and Paulson seems like the perfect actress to embody the role.

Ratched is set to premiere on Netflix on September 18, 2020.  Take a look at the trailer below!
