Bad Hair, a new body horror film from Justin Simien (Dear White People), gives new meaning to the phrase “beauty is pain” in a new teaser trailer dropped by Hulu ahead of its streaming debut.
The streaming service picked up the rights to the horror film at Sundance earlier this year for a reported $8 million, according to Deadline.
Anna Bludso (Elle Lorraine) was traumatized as a child after her scalp was burned by a relaxer perm. Since that time, she’s kept her hair natural. The year is 1989 and grown-up Anna is working as an on-air music video TV show host called Culture. When her old boss is replaced by Zora (Vanessa Williams), the woman demands that Anna tame her hair.
Anna heads to the beauty shop where a mystical hairdresser (Laverne Cox) gives her a weave, and for a while Anna’s career is smooth sailing. That is until the hair takes on a dark mind of its own.
The film is packed with talent, including Blair Underwood, Usher Raymond, Jay Pharoah, Lena Waithe, Kelly Rowland, and James Van Der Beek, and if the teaser trailer is any indication, there’s plenty of horror to go around.
Bad Hair is set to debut on Hulu on October 23, 2020. Check out that trailer below and let us know if you’ll be watching!
