Lars Von Trier has a singular voice. It’s a voice he has used with precision and chaotic execution for sometime. I love what this dude does. The more “bizarre” the better. Is he a little self-indulgent at times? Sure. But that doesn’t mean his body of work is any less great because of it.
The trailer for The House That Jack Built is filled with all sorts of creeping dread and unease. It almost seems to be speaking directly to an age where you have to watch what you say and do on social media. This movie is screaming at you and it isn’t saying anything nice.
Matt Dillon plays Jack as he evolves over the course of 12 years into a full fledged serial killer. Each kill bringing him closer to realizing his true self. The tone appears to be in the same vein as the brutal and gritty Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer with classic Von Trier sensibilities.
The kills are savage and Dillon is really bringing it here in his approach of a seemingly existential predator.
Von Trier is effective at making his films that aren’t horror films feel terrifying. What he is going to do with with an actual “horror” film is making my stomach turn. We are going to be in for a ride folks.
