There is some seriously great news out of Dynamite Entertainment, you guys! If you are a vampire, yourself. Or, if you just love vampires you know who Vampirella is. Vampirella has been around in comic form ever since the late 60’s. She has been around kicking butt and looking fantastic this entire time. While there was a Roger Corman attempt at Vampirella back in the 90’s it wasn’t very memorable and definitely didn’t hold up to the comics at all.
Now, Dynamite Entertainment has signed a deal that is bringing Vampirella both to a feature film and a TV series. Nick Newbauer of Mike the Pike productions will also produce.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to bring this amazing character to screen in a big way. Nick Barucci, founder and CEO of the prolific Dynamite Comics, is an incredible visionary with an eye for story, and a talent for integration into the zeitgeist. [Barucci] and everyone at Dynamite have resurrected this character in a significant way over the past decade. We are truly grateful for the faith and support of Dynamite, Nick, and their reps, including producer/manager Ford Gilmore of Illuminati Entertainment.” Newbauer told Super Hero Hype.
Vampirella hails from planet Drakulon (how cool is that name?) where blood was as readily available as water is on Earth. Once the resource dried up, Vampirella was forced to find the nearest source of blood for her people. That of course was Earth. To her surprise she discovers that Earth’s Vampires are all descendants of Dracula. Originally, her mission was to find a way to save her people on Planet Drakulon by means of a blood supply on Earth. The books were really great, and she was one of the first ever vampire comics I read.
Throughout her time in comics, she has crossed paths with Lady Death, Van Helsing, Dracula, and several other characters from vampire lore. Over the years Vampirella has been taken in several different directions, depending on the arc and artist. But her being a badass with plenty of vampire abilities has always remained a constant.
There isn’t any word what story the film and tv series will follow, but we are hoping they remain as close as possible to the original source material.
Well, Vampirella fans, who do you think would be a great actress to cast as the lead? Let us know in the comments section.
