ABC has announced that it will not be moving ahead with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s vampire drama The Brides.
The series, based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, had a contemporary setting and was meant to focus on the Brides of Dracula, telling the story of those wraith-like, beautiful vampires who seemed to follow the Count wherever he went.
The series had already announced some impressive casting including Gina Torres (Firefly) as Cleo, the leader of the three vampire women who will stop at nothing to protect her family and their secrets. Croatian actor Goran Visnjic (Practical Magic) was set to play the legendary Count Dracula who was abandoned by his “brides.”
According to Variety, the show seems to have ultimately been cancelled due to it price tag. Budgets have had to be cut in the wake of Covid-19, and pricier shows that aren’t a guaranteed success are being set aside. The network also cancelled Thirtysomething(else) a reboot of the popular Thirtysomething series that ran back in the 90s.
Aguirre-Sacasa hasn’t given up on the show just yet however. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale showrunner took to Twitter to give us some small hope that the show could be reborn elsehwere.
Like all the best vampires, “The Brides” WILL rise again. The world MUST meet Queen Cleo, Madame de Sade, and young Lily Stevens…👠👰🏽👰🏻👰🏼🧛🏻♂️❤️ pic.twitter.com/65kOtYypRA

So, now we wait. We’ll also be keeping our eyes peeled to see just how far these cuts run. Undoubtedly more shows than usual will find themselves on the chopping black as the entertainment biz navigates new production requirements.
