'Nightflyers' - Syfy

The first teaser has debuted for Syfy’s TV series adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers novella! The trailer opens with the blood spattered hallways of a space vessel, as a crew member records a very cryptic message:

“This is a warning, not a distress call,” she says ominously, “Do not board this ship. Do not bring The Nightflyer back to Earth.”

We get some behind-the-scenes looks as George R.R. Martin makes an appearance to give audiences a taste of what they have in store for us. “Nightflyers is a haunted house story on a starship,” says Martin, “It’s Psycho in space. I can’t wait to actually see it come alive on the screen.”

Syfy is holding nothing back for the production. The trailer is beautifully cinematic, and channels aesthetic similarities to modern sci-fi horror films like Alien: Covenant. Supervising producer Sean Ryerson describes the impressive set build as “acres of spaceship.” Sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter claimed the series, which is being co-produced by Netflix, is the most expensive drama Syfy has ever developed.

Nightflyers being George R.R. Martin’s next TV adaptation as Game of Thrones approaches its final season is going to be a huge draw. However, it may be a bit of a leap for GoT fans to go from an epic fantasy world to confined corridors. The show bears more resemblance to Alien than GoT in both look and premise.

Syfy clearly wants Nightflyers to be a tentpole series for them to bank on, but it is yet to be seen if Martin’s novella will stretch as far as his expansive GoT saga. Series like The Walking Dead prove horror/dramas with compelling characters and excellent production quality have potential to garner a huge following.

Nightflyers will air this fall on Syfy. Netflix will be getting first run rights to the show outside of the United States. Check out the teaser below, and tell us what you think!
