While HBO’s True Detective would never be considered straight-up horror, there’s no doubt that it’s upcoming return is of interest to many horror fans. After all, despite being a crime thriller, season one was one of the most unsettling shows to hit TV in recent memory.
True Detective season one – which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and drew nearly universal acclaim – featured some of the creepiest sequences out there, and showcased human monsters as terrifying as any supernatural creature ever could be.
Of course, then there was the Vince Vaughn-fronted season two, which – to put it bluntly – kinda sucked. The reaction to it was so bad that it looked like True Detective was gone for good, until HBO finally announced that season three was in the works earlier this year.
Starring Oscar-winning Luke Cage and Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali in the lead – with Blade’s Stephen Dorff as his partner – True Detective season three looks to take the series back to its roots. The recently released trailer carried a dark vibe very similar to season one.
Now, HBO has revealed (via Deadline) when exactly True Detective season three will premiere: January 13th, 2019. I for one can’t wait to return to the seedy, unnerving underworld that season one crafted so brilliantly. Here’s hoping this isn’t another season two.
