Yesterday, CinemaCon 2019 audiences caught an early glimpse at some footage from Joker — the DC villain origin story starring Joaquin Pheonix as the titular crazed clown. As for the rest of us, we didn’t have to wait too long until an official trailer was released.
The plot outline details “a failed stand-up comedian who is driven insane and becomes a psychopathic murderer”. We still don’t know too much about the film at this point, though essentially it acts as an origin story for a character who has no definitive origin.
At the CinemaCon panel, director Todd Phillips explained that the film is “still taking shape” and he “wants it to be a surprise”, adding that most of the talk online isn’t accurate. He emphasized that he sees the movie as a tragedy, which seems pretty in line with fan reactions that have been drawing comparisons to Taxi Driver.
Directed by Todd Phillips and written by Phillips with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz, with Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, and Shea Wingham.
Joker will hit theaters on October 4, 2019. You can check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
