'Velvet Buzzsaw' (2019) - Netflix

Netflix just put the trailer for Dan Gilroy’s Velvet Buzzsaw on display, and it’s as bizarre as you’d expect a horror movie about contemporary art to be. Gilroy is teaming up, once again, with his Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for this twisted look at the art criticism business. Hereditary’s Toni Collette, and Bird Box’s John Malkovich will be two more A-listers rounding out the film’s cast.

Vanity Fair dropped the trailer this morning, with Gilroy describing the film to them as, “a satirical thriller set in the big-money art world of L.A.” It’s an instance of art imitating life, as Gilroy was reportedly inspired to create Velvet Buzzsaw after a visit to the Dia contemporary-art gallery in Beacon, New York.

Jake Gyllenhaal will star as contemporary art critic Morf Vandelwalt (The most pretentious sounding art critic name ever). Rene Russo will play Rhodora Haze, who is the owner of the biggest contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles. John Malkovich’s character Piers is the most successful contemporary artist in the world, whose decision to stop drinking has affected his ability to create new work. Toni Collette plays a former curator turned art advisor to pursue financial success.

According to Vanity Fair, Gilroy is a self-proclaimed “contemporary-art aficionado who doesn’t collect.” His interview makes it sound as though he’s passionate about the art world, and the current monetized state of the industry has prompted him to put it under the lens.

Velvet Buzzsaw will be streaming on Netflix February 1, 2019. Check out the trailer below!
