Peeping Tom (1960), courtesy Astor Pictures Corporation.

Peeping Tom

Peeping Tom is about a lonely, maladjusted photographer who designs a movie camera that stabs its subject right as their image is being recorded, effectively letting the killer capture the exact moment of death on film.  Of course, the anti-hero gets a little too close to one of his prospective victims.

Beating Psycho to the theater by mere months in 1960, Peeping Tom is credited by the creepy voice in Scream 4 as being the first slasher movie.  While that claim may be up for debate, the fact that Peeping Tom an awesome movie is not.  In its day, Peeping Tom was a highly controversial movie, effectively ending the career of director Michael Powell.  Today it is seen as one of the greatest British horror movies of all time.  Decide for yourself here at Popcornflix.

Funny Games (2007), courtesy Warner Independent Pictures (WIP).

Funny Games

A few years back, Tightwad Terror Tuesday brough you director Michael Haneke’s disturbing Austrian movie Funny Games.  Now, we’ve got the 2007 English Language remake.  Also directed by Haneke, this version is pretty much a beat-for-beat remake about a pair of charming juvenile delinquents that torments an unwitting family at their vacation home.

Honestly, this Funny Games feels like Haneke trying to bring a story that’s important to him to a wider audience.  And, with a cast that includes Tim Roth, Naomi Watts, and Michael Pitt, it’s not exactly a pointless exercise.  It’s got just as much bite as the original.  Check out Funny Games here at Vudu.

Choke (2020), courtesy Cinema Epoch.

Choke

Not to be confused with the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation of the same name, Choke is a 2020 movie about a serial killer who finds himself smitten with a girl.  The girl, however, is also involved with a cop who is very…unorthodox…in his job.  Oh, and there are a lot of people who like to choke and be choked (so it’s not just a clever name).

Choke appears to be an entry into the Amateur Porn Star Killer series of films, with the killer being the same person, both in name and actor (Shane Ryan).  It does stand on its own, however, so if you’re new to the game, don’t sweat it.  Not as brutal and horrific as the setup makes it sound, Choke is more of an arthouse character study of a bunch of really messed up people.  If that sounds like your bag, you can find Choke here at TubiTV.

The Amityville Horror (2005), courtesy Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

The Amityville Horror

The original 1979 The Amityville Horror is a cultural phenomenon, the bar by which all haunted house movies is measured.  This is the 2005 remake.  The story is pretty much the same – a family moves into their dream home, only to find that it was the scene of a horrific murder a few years before.  And the victims never left.

In truth, this The Amityville Horror is a pretty solid interpretation, if a little pointless.  Without the mass hysteria machine of the original movie, it’s not nearly as scary.  But it does have Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Philip Baker Hall in it, so that’s something.  Catch The Amityville Horror  here at IMDB TV.

Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters (2019), courtesy Crackle.

Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters

Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters is, of course, a documentary about the making of Ghostbusters.  Through archival footage and interviews with the cast and crew, filmmakers Claire and Anthony Bueno explore the influential and beloved movie in detail.

This 2019 documentary is pretty standard fare as far as behind-the-scenes pieces go.  But, it’s about Ghostbusters, so it’s still special.  It runs a bit long, but fans will love every minute.  Have a look at Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters here at Crackle.
