Hey Tightwads! It’s Taco Tuesday, and Cinco de Mayo, but most of us are still wisely staying at home. Let’s watch some free movies to kill the time…
Let the Right One In
Let the Right One In is a 2008 Swedish movie about a young boy who meets a peculiar girl who happens to be a vampire. She teaches him to fight back against his bullies, but there may be an ulterior motive to her tutelage. Hint: she’s a freaking vampire.
This modern classic was remade a couple of years later in English, but this is the original, creepy foreign language version. As far as vampire movies go, it’s solid. It sticks to the overall mythology, while still being revisionist enough to keep interesting. If you’re not tired of vampires, have a look at Let the Right One In here at TubiTV.
Quarantine 2: Terminal
A couple of weeks ago, we brought you Quarantine to celebrate the, well, national quarantine. Now, we’ve got the sequel, Quarantine 2: Terminal. This 2011 movie is about the same weird outbreak as the first movie, but this time, it’s on a place. Even when the plane makes an emergency landing, the passengers find that they are stuck in a dangerous…Quarantine!
Quarantine 2: Terminal isn’t as good as Quarantine, but at least it’s not a found footage movie. It’s light on plot, but heavy on atmosphere. You can find Quarantine 2: Terminal here at Crackle.
The Levenger Tapes
Speaking of found footage, The Levenger Tapes is about three college students who go missing while camping. The students left behind some videotapes that give the authorities clues as to where they might be – and who is responsible for their disappearance.
This 2013 movie is about as creative as found footage movies get, with its slowly unravelling mystery and its gentle twists and turns. Of course, this isn’t going to be for everyone, but it might be for you. Check out The Levenger Tapes here at Vudu.
The Call is about a 911 operator who gets a call from a girl who has been abducted and is in the trunk of a moving car. As she strives the help the girl figure out where she is so that she can send help, the operator notices strange parallels between the current call and a failed call from her past that has haunted her for her entire career.
This 2013 thriller is a tense and suspenseful ride through the streets of Los Angeles. Brad Anderson directs, and the cast includes Halle Berry as the operator and Abigail Breslin as the kidnapping victim. Answer The Call here at TubiTV.
Kontroll is about a ticket taker who works – and lives – in the underground subways of Budapest. By day, the man and his colleagues stop people from riding the trains for free. By night, they engage in all sorts of weird, self-destructive behavior. Oh, and to complete the picture, there’s a killer who lives in the metro tunnels with them.
This 2003 Hungarian film is dark and disturbing, but also quirky and funny. It’s almost Lynchian in its strangeness. It’s also got a pumping score from Neo. Catch Kontroll here at ShoutFactoryTV.
