Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (2013), courtesy Tribeca Film.

Hansel & Gretel Get Baked

In honor of the recent Oz Perkins joint Gretel & Hansel, this week Tightwad Terror Tuesday is going to take a look at Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.  This 2013 movie is a modern retelling of the old folk tale, but with the obvious twist of the witch using a potent strain of marijuana to lure in our brother-and-sister heroes.

Yeah, Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is silly, but that’s pretty much the point of any stoner comedy (see Halloweed from a few weeks back).  Lara Flynn Boyle stars as the witch, and hey, is that Cary Elwes?  Yes, it is.  Get a whiff of Hansel & Gretel Get Baked here at Vudu.

Turkey Shoot

And speaking of recent movies…with the announcement that Blumhouse’s The Hunt will finally be released, let’s go ahead and check out Turkey Shoot.  Also known as Escape 2000, Turkey Shoot is a 1982 movie set in a totalitarian society where political prisoners are sent to camps to be tortured and neglected, culminating in an event where the prisoners are set free to try and make it back to civilization, only to have the guards hunt them down.

Of course, all of these movies are just rehashes of The Most Dangerous Game.  Which is fine, because it’s a versatile and exciting premise.  Steve Railsback and Olivia Hussey lead the surprisingly stellar cast.  Take aim at Turkey Shoot here at ShoutFactoryTV.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. 2 (2013), courtesy Magnolia Pictures.

Nymphomaniac

Nymphomaniac is about a woman whose life is saved by a good samaritan after she is nearly beaten to death in an alley.  As she recuperates, she tells him her life story, including every bit of her history of sexual deviance and violent abuse.

This 2013 Lars von Trier flick is split into two parts, each a couple of hours long, so it’s a whole lot of brutal and disturbing imagery.  Not quite a horror movie, but unsettling just the same.  The all-star cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Shia LeBeouf, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth, and Jamie Bell.  This one is not for the kiddies, but once they’re safely in bed, you can find Nymphomaniac: Vol I here and Vol II here, both at TubiTV.

Cold Comes the Night (2013), courtesy Sony Pictures Releasing.

Cold Comes the Night

Cold Comes the Night is about a blind criminal who needs to retrieve a cache of loot from a corrupt police officer.  Being blind is a problem, though, so he enlists the involuntary help of an innkeeper and his daughter to be his eyes during his caper.

This 2013 thriller has a cool premise that leads to some fun twists and turns.  It’s mostly just a run-of-the-mill crime drama, though; a fun watch, if a bit disposable.  Bryan Cranston and Logan Marshall-Green headline the cast.  Check out Cold Comes the Night here at Crackle.

Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys (2014), courtesy Gravitas Ventures.

Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys

Okay, so this one is not even remotely horror, but should still be of interest to fans.  Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys is a 2014 documentary about, quite obviously, Star Wars toys.  The movie traces the history of the intellectual property, from unwanted merchandise license to multi-billion-dollar franchise.

The most fun aspect of this movie is the pure nostalgia of it all – my childhood bedroom had the exact wallpaper that is shown behind one of the interview subjects.  Those who grew up with Star Wars and the classic Kenner toys will have a blast with this one.  Catch Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys here at TubiTV.
