Black Christmas (1974), courtesy Film Funding Ltd. of Canada.

Black Christmas

Black Christmas is a classic slasher from 1974, meaning that it predates Halloween by four years.  The movie is about a sorority house that starts getting creepy phone calls right as most of the girls are going home for Christmas break.  Those who are left in the house are forced to deal with a deranged lunatic murderer.

At first glance, it seems as if everything in Black Christmas has been done to death; it’s only when you realize that Black Christmas did it all first that you grasp the innovation and creativity of this particular movie.  It’s also directed by Bob “A Christmas Story” Clark, and stars Margot Kidder, Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, and John Saxon.  This one is definitely worth checking out, especially for slasher fans, so check it out right here on Vudu.

Jack Frost (1997), courtesy Frost Bite Films Ltd.

Jack Frost

Not to be confused with the Michael Keaton children’s movie of the same name, Jack Frost is about a condemned killer whose prison transport collides with a chemical truck, soaking the convict in a substance which basically turns him into water with the ability to freeze and unfreeze at will – a human snowman.  He promptly goes after the cop who arrested him.

This 1997 straight-to-video gem is fantastically cheezy, but it is a ton of fun, especially if viewed with a group of friends.  It features a young Shannon Elizabeth, who also happens to be in the most memorable scene in the film…let’s just say, bathtubs are filled with water, and water can freeze into a murderous snowman.  Jack Frost can be seen here at Crackle, and if you want more, the sequel, Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman, is right here, also at Crackle.

Rare Exports (2010), courtesy Kinology.

Rare Exports

Rare Exports is about an archeological expedition that excavates Santa Claus from a mountain in Finland.  Not long after the big guy is dug up, children start disappearing.  A concerned father captures Santa to save the kids, but he has to fight off the group of angry elves who are on a mission to liberate their fearless leader.

This 2010 holiday horror is a weird little movie.  It both reinforces and subverts the Santa Claus legend, all over the course of about 80 minutes or so.  See Rare Exports here at Popcornflix.

Better Watch Out (2016), courtesy Well Go USA Entertainment.

Better Watch Out

Not to be confused with Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!, this Better Watch Out is about a teenage babysitter who is watching a young boy on Christmas Eve.  At some point during the night, an intruder breaks into the house and the pair is forced to defend themselves against the attack.  But this is far from a typical home invasion.

This 2016 shocker is full of twists and turns, some clever and some head-scratching.  It’s a very enjoyable watch.  And you can watch it right here at Vudu.

Red Christmas (2016), courtesy Artsploitation Films.

Red Christmas

Red Christmas is a 2016 thriller is about an already dysfunctional family whose Christmas celebration is interrupted by a mysterious stranger.  However, the stranger isn’t so mysterious to the mom of the family.

Part suspenseful slasher and part tasteless schlock, Red Christmas has to be seen to be believed.  In case you’re not sold on it yet, everyone’s favorite horror mom, Dee Wallace, stars as, of course, the mom.  Check out Red Christmas right here at Popcornflix.
