Hey Tightwads!  Halloween is now firmly in the rearview mirror, but we’ve got more free movies to keep the scares coming.  Check out these cheap chills…

Scream (1996), courtesy Dimension Films.

Scream

Scream is a modern classic about a serial killer who uses horror movies as an inspiration while stalking a group of hapless high school kids.  A girl whose mother was murdered a year before seems to be the focus of the murderer, and she becomes a competent foe for the maniac.

Wes Craven basically re-invented the slasher genre with this 1996 flick and set off a wave of imitators that kept going well into the 21st century.  The hip young cast includes Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, and Liev Schreiber.  Oh, and Drew Barrymore in the best cold open since When a Stranger Calls.  You’ve probably seen Scream, but if you haven’t, or if you just want to see it again, you can find it here at TubiTV.

Cruising (1980), courtesy Lorimar.

Cruising

Cruising is about a serial killer who preys upon gay men in the New York S&M scene.  A police detective goes deep undercover to try and catch the madman, but soon finds himself in over his head as he gets immersed in the subculture.

Released in 1980, this William Friedkin-directed joint was a product of its pre-AIDS time period.  It may be a tad exaggerated, but it’s an unflinching look at the gay club scene of late seventies New York.  Or, at least, it’s a look at what Friedkin thought the subculture was.  Al Pacino turns in a committed performance as the undercover cop.  Check out Cruising here at Vudu.

The Lazarus Effect (2015), courtesy Blumhouse Productions.

The Lazarus Effect

Not to be confused with The Lazarus Project, The Lazarus Effect is about a team of researchers that figures out a way to bring organisms back from the dead.  When one of their own is killed, they decide to perform their first human test on their friend.  Of course, this is a horror movie, so things don’t go quite as smoothly as planned.

This 2015 spookfest is one of those movies that you swear that you’ve seen before, even when you haven’t.  It’s almost like you could make this movie by compiling scenes from other, better horror movies.  The cast is solid, with Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, and Ray Wise.  Have a look at The Lazarus Effect here at TubiTV.

Unbreakable (2000), courtesy Touchstone Pictures.

Unbreakable

Unbreakable is a 2000 movie about a man who is the only survivor of a massive train wreck.  But that’s just the beginning of the story.  It turns out that the reason he survived the crash is because he is a superhero, and once the world finds out about him, the supervillains come out of the woodwork.

Unbreakable is M. Night Shyamalan’s follow-up to his massive breakthrough hit The Sixth Sense.  At the time of its release, Unbreakable didn’t turn too many heads, but it has since inspired the sequels Split and Glass, and now has a comfortable cult following.  Bruce Willis plays the unbreakable man, and Samuel L. Jackson plays his nemesis.  Catch Unbreakable here at Vudu.

Backcountry (2016), courtesy Vertical Entertainment.

Backcountry

There’s a little confusion about this next one.  Despite what the synopsis says, this Backcountry is not the 2014 movie about a couple of hikers that encounters a ferocious bear.  This Backcountry is the 2016 movie about an estranged father who gets snowed in with his two sons.  The boys soon start to think that the father they barely know may be their biggest threat.

Also known as Edge of Winter, this contained little thriller is not as good as the bear stalking one, but it’ll do.  Keep as eye out for a little pre-Spider-Man Tom Holland as one of the sons.  Watch Backcountry, aka Edge of Winter, here at Crackle.
