Sinister (2012), courtesy Lionsgate.
Sinister
There’s been a lot of hype about the fact that science has named Sinister as the scariest movie of all time. So we may as well let you Tightwads decide for yourselves. Sinister is about a true-crime author who moves into a house that was the scene of a grisly murder so that he can write a book about it. While researching, he comes across a box of 8mm films in the attic, and when he plays them, he sees way more than he bargained for.
This is a cool variation on the stale found-footage motif, and its inventiveness gives way to some gruesome scares. This one was directed by Scott Derrickson, and Ethan Hawke stars as the writer. Scary is in the eye of the beholder, but Sinister was one of the best horror movies of 2012, so if you somehow missed it, you can catch it right here at TubiTV.

Pacific Rim (2013), courtesy Warner Bros.
Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim is about a war between humans and kaiju. In order to even the score while fighting the gigantic monsters, the humans devise huge robots that are controlled by a pair of pilots who are connected telepathically. It’s just as awesome as it sounds.
This 2013 movie is writer/director (and Oscar Winner) Guillermo del Toro’s loving tribute to the 50’s kaiju movies of his youth. The stellar cast includes Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman. Check out Pacific Rim here at Crackle.

Bodysnatch (2017), courtesy Gravitas Ventures.
Bodysnatch
Bodysnatch is about a group of friends that goes on a police ride-along/joyride with another friend of theirs who is an officer. While on their adventure, they discover that the world has been infiltrated by an alien race that wants to do more than just inhabit the Earth.
This 2017 sci-fi thriller is a clever little flick, even if it does rely a bit heavily on the classic movie from which it cribs its name. Still a fun watch, though. And you can watch Bodysnatch here at Popcornflix.

Night Fright (1967), courtesy David Grant.
Night Fright
Not to be confused with the beloved 1985 vampire movie Fright Night (or its capable 2011 remake), Night Fright is a classic schlockfest about a government experiment that tests the effects of cosmic rays on animal life. Of course, the tests wind up creating a mutant monster.
Night Fright is indicative of its 1967 era, even if it isn’t quite representative of its name. It’s a cool little creature feature that has flown under the radar, though. So if monster movies are your thing, you can find Night Fright here at TubiTV.

Unseen (2016), courtesy FilmRise.
Unseen
Unseen is a 2016 true-crime documentary about Anthony Sowell, better known as the Cleveland Strangler. Sowell was a notorious serial killer and sexual predator, and through interviews with surviving victims, Unseen explores the reasons why his crimes went unnoticed for so long.
Unseen is a riveting and disturbing watch. It’s also quite an unbelievable story. And it’s all real. If you’re into true-crime, it will be right up your alley. Have a look at Unseen here at Vudu.
