Tightwad Terror Tuesday – Free Movies for 10-8-19

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), courtesy Paramount Pictures.

10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane is about a young woman who, after an automobile accident, wakes up in an underground bunker with two men who claim that the world above has been destroyed by a chemical attack.  One of the men seems a little unstable, causing her to question whether anything he says about the outside world is true.

Made in absolute secrecy in 2016, this sci-fi thriller is a Cloverfield sequel in name only.  It possibly exists within the same universe, but with the sparse, three-person cast, there’s no overlap with the first movie.  Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the frightened woman, John Goodman portrays the unstable man, and John Gallagher Jr. is caught in the middle.  Catch 10 Cloverfield Lane here at TubiTV.

Sushi Girl (2012), courtesy Magnet Releasing.

Sushi Girl

Sushi Girl is a 2012 movie about a jewel thief who is released from prison after serving six years for robbery.  To show their appreciation his silence, the men for whom he took the fall treat him to a sushi dinner, served off of the body of a young, beautiful woman.  Over the course of the meal, tensions rise and grudges erupt.

Sushi Girl is one of those movies that is so simple, yet so effective, with a serious Reservoir Dogs vibe.  The cast is first rate, with Noah Hathaway playing the ex-con, and Tony Todd, Mark Hamill, James Duval, and Andy Mackenzie playing his old gang.  Oh, and modern scream queen Cortney Palm is the titular Sushi Girl.  Check it out here at PlutoTV.

Con Air (1997), courtesy Buena Vista Pictures.

Con Air

Why Nicolas Cage didn’t just retire after 1997 is a question for the ages.  Between the awesome Face/Off and the equally awesome Con Air, there was nowhere to go but down.  Con Air stars Cage as a prison inmate who is hitching a ride on an experimental plane full of dangerous convicts known as Con Air.  Of course, the inmates take over the plane, and Cage’s character has to play both sides in order to get home to his family in one piece.

As far as action movies go, they don’t get much batter than Con Air.  As if the cast needed more than just Nic Cage, John Cusack also shows up as an air marshal, and John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, Dave Chappelle, Danny Trejo, and Steve Buscemi are the convicts.  Con Air is a must-watch, so if you need to, you can find it here at Vudu.

The Horror of Party Beach (1964), courtesy Twentieth Century Fox.

The Horror of Party Beach

The Horror of Party Beach is a groovy 1964 flick about a sea monster that is created by a barrel of radioactive sludge that falls overboard from a passing ship.  The monster hits the beach just in time to ruin a ragin’ party, Daddy-O!

This clever-yet-obvious beach party/creature feature mashup is a fun little B-movie excursion.  Besides the Corman-esque monster design, the high point is the soundtrack from surf-rock band The Del-Aires, who play themselves in the film.  Rock out with The Horror of Party Beach here at Shout Factory TV.

The Evil Down the Street (2019), courtesy Indie Rights.

The Evil Down the Street

The Evil Down the Street is a 2019 movie about a family that moves into a new home in the suburbs.  Their new house comes with an old Ouija board left in the basement, and after the kids play with it, their mother starts acting suspiciously weird.

Supposedly “inspired by actual events,” The Evil Down the Street is a pretty standard Ouija board possession movie.  It’s got all of the clichés, stereotypes, and trappings of the sub-subgenre, but at least it’s not a found footage flick.  Have a look at The Evil Down the Street here at TubiTV.
