Hey Tightwads!  October is here, and you’ve probably got all your 31 Days of Horror viewing all planned out, but if there are any gaps in the schedule, here are a bunch of free movies to help fill them in…

Tightwad Terror Tuesday – Free Movies for 10-1-19

Severance (2006), courtesy Magnolia Pictures.

Severance is a 2006 movie about a group of sales executives that goes on a team-building retreat in the wilderness.  Soon enough, the city slickers find themselves being hunted down by a group of killers on a mission.

This survival horror flick is the standard hide-and-stalk story, part Deliverance and part The World’s Most Dangerous Game.  The anonymous hunters all have fun names like “Flamethrower Killer” and “Head-Squish Killer,” so you pretty much know what you’re getting.  If you’re up for it, Severance can be found here at Pluto TV.

Gravity (2013), courtesy Warner Bros.

Speaking of survival movies…Gravity is the Oscar-nominated (and winning) 2013 movie about a grizzled veteran astronaut and a green medical technician who wind up floating aimlessly in space after a freak accident destroys the International Space Station.  The pair must work together to find a way back to Earth.

This contained thriller is a marvel of modern filmmaking.  It swept the technical Academy Awards the year of its eligibility.  Legendary long-take master Alfonso Cuarón wrote and directed the movie, and Sandra Bullock has a field day, with her pal George Clooney floating around space with her, for a while at least.  Check out Gravity here at Vudu.

Crawl (2011), courtesy Salient Media.

This is not the 2019 Crawl about rogue alligators in a hurricane.  This Crawl is about a shady bar owner who hires an equally shady hitman to bump off a patron who owes him money.  Of course, double- and triple-crosses abound, resulting in an innocent waitress being taken hostage.

This 2011 dark comedy feels a bit like a lost Coen Brothers movie.  It’s an economical movie, seemingly unfolding like a stage play, besides the fact that there’s very little dialogue.  If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can see Crawl here at Popcornflix.

Bear (2010), courtesy Epic Pictures Group.

The aptly-title Bear is about two couples who get a flat tire while taking a shortcut through a forest on their way to an anniversary dinner.  As they are changing the tire, they are visited by a curious grizzly bear.  One of the men kills the bear, and the bear’s mate shows up, bent on revenge.

This 2010 man-vs.-nature flick is not exactly Jaws, but it’s a lot of fun, particularly for fans of bears-gone-wild movies like Grizzly or Backcountry.  Like Crawl, this is an economical little thriller, basically taking place completely in an upturned van and utilizing just the four characters.  They do use real bears, though, at least for much of the movie, so there’s that.  Catch Bear here at TubiTV.

When Michael Calls (1972), courtesy American Broadcasting Company (ABC).

When Michael Calls

When Michael Calls is a 1972 made-for-TV movie about a woman who starts receiving eerie phone calls from her nephew, Michael.  The only problem is that Michael died fifteen years earlier, and the phone calls seem to coincide with other family members’ deaths.

When Michael Calls was made back when TV movies were allowed to be scary.  Ben Gazzara, Michael Douglas, Elizabeth Ashley, and Al Waxman all star in this ABC Movie Of The Week.  Find out what happens When Michael Calls here at YouTube.
