Tightwad Terror Tuesday for 9-18-18 – The Best Free Movies on the Web
Horns (2013), courtesy Dimension Films

Horns stars Daniel Radcliffe (yes, Harry Potter himself) as a young man whose girlfriend is brutally raped and murdered.  He is considered the prime suspect, but shortly after her death, he sprouts horns on his head and develops supernatural mental powers that he can use to search for the real killer.

Based on a novel by Joe Hill (better known as Stephen King’s son), this 2013 movie is a wonderful mix of the fantastical and the horrifying.  It’s directed by Alexandre Aja and the support cast includes heavyweights like Juno Temple, James Remar, Kathleen Quinlan, and Heather Graham.  Check out Horns here at Vudu.

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974), courtesy Hammer Films

Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell

Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell sees Doctor Frankenstein, played by the inimitable Peter Cushing, carrying on with his experiment with re-animating dead corpses, despite being housed in an insane asylum.  With the help of an apprentice, Frankenstein constructs a hulking mass of a creature out of the body of a homicidal inmate.

This 1974 fright flick was the last of the Hammer Frankenstein reinventions.  It was also director Terence Fisher’s final film.  Fun connection; the monster is played by David Prowse, which warmed him up for playing Darth Vader to Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars.  Awesome.  Catch Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell here at Popcornflix.

The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), courtesy British Lion Film Corporation

The Man who Fell to Earth

Just as the name suggests, The Man Who Fell to Earth is about an alien who, well, falls to Earth.  He comes in search of water for his home planet, which is suffering from a severe drought.  While trying to find a way to transport water back to his own dying world, his extreme intelligence helps him become a millionaire tech mogul.  But he still needs to save his planet.

This 1976 movie is more sci-fi fantasy than horror, but it stars David Bowie in the title role, and everyone needs more Bowie in his or her life, so we’re going to allow it.  If that’s not enough for you, The Man Who Fell to Earth was directed by horror director Nicolas Roeg and costars the slasherificly-named Rip Torn.  Have a look at The Man Who Fell to Earth right here at TubiTV.

Shortwave (2016), courtesy Vega, Baby!

Shortwave is a 2016 movie about a pair of researchers who are studying the origins of a strange short wave radio signal.  While holed up in an isolated facility, the scientists have a breakthrough, but the signal has an adverse effect on the fragile psyche of the wife of one of the men.  The team has to figure out if the noise is something sinister, or if it’s all in their heads.

Shortwave is a creative little thriller, very simple, yet very effective.  This one is visually stunning, and sonically horrifying.  Give Shortwave a glance here at Crackle.

Demon of Paradise (1987), courtesy Concorde Pictures

Demon of Paradise

Set in Hawaii, Demon of Paradise is about a reptilian humanoid monster that is awakened by the blasts of illegal dynamite fishermen.  The creature sets its hungry sights on a vacation resort, and it’s up to a brilliant scientist and the local sheriff to save the day.

Although it was made in 1987, Demon of Paradise has the look and feel of a seventies Jaws ripoff.  It actually is a rather loose remake of the 1979 Jaws ripoff Up From the Depths.  So, for fun, you can play trace the aquatic horror inspiration.  Or just watch Demon of Paradise here at ShoutFactoryTV.
