The Brood (1979), courtesy New World Pictures.

The Brood

The Brood is about a woman who is under the care of an unconventional psychiatrist.  Her already suspicious husband gets even more concerned when their daughter returns from a visit with her mother covered in scratches and bruises.  Oh, and there are a bunch of murderous little kids running around, too.

Predating even Scanners by a couple of years, this 1979 David Cronenberg film is the director at his most Cronenbergian.  Oliver Reed turns in a chilling performance as the doctor, with Art Hindle playing the husband and Samantha Eggar playing the wife.  The Brood is arguably Cronenberg’s best movie (okay, maybe only argued by me), so consider it essential viewing.  You can find The Brood here at Kanopy.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), courtesy Allied Artists Pictures.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

And speaking of essential viewing…Invasion of the Body Snatchers is about a town whose residents are being replaced by aliens who hatch from pods.  The aliens are exact duplicates of the townsfolk, so the doctor who learns of the plan has no idea who has been cloned and who hasn’t…meaning he doesn’t know who he can trust and who he can’t.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers has been remade several times over the years (most notably in 1978), but this is the original 1956 Don Siegel-directed version.  You should see it, and you can see it here at Popcornflix.

Piranha (1978), courtesy New World Pictures.

Piranha is about a resort on a river that finds itself overrun by an infestation of deadly mutant piranha that feasts upon the guests.  There’s more science and conspiracy to it than that, but really, that’s about it.  It’s not just a clever name.

Of all of the Jaws clones, Piranha might just be the most fun.  Actually, the most fun is Grizzly, but this 1978 Roger Corman-produced, Joe Dante-directed, John Sayles-written horror comedy is a classic schlock film.  The cast includes plenty of horror legends like Barbara Steele, Dick Miller, Kevin McCarthy (who is also in Invasion of the Body Snatchers up there), Paul Bartel, Belinda Balaski, and Melody Thomas.  Catch Piranha here at Shout Factory TV.

Honeymoon (2014), courtesy Magnet Releasing.

Honeymoon is a 2014 creeper about a newlywed couple who goes to a lake house for their, well, honeymoon.  The husband soon finds his wife acting strangely, doing things like talking to herself and sleepwalking.  Before long, he learns that sinister things are afoot.

Honeymoon is a moody and atmospheric movie, and it’s a refreshing change from the typical slasher movie that usually is set at a lake house.  Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway play the happy couple.  Check out Honeymoon right here at TubiTV.

The Bell Witch Haunting (2013), courtesy The Asylum.

The Bell Witch Haunting

Based on the same true story as An American Haunting and Bell Witch: The Movie, The Bell Witch Haunting is about a family that winds up dead.  When footage from their cameras and cell phones is examined, it is discovered that the crime is not just a simple murder-suicide; it is the work of a paranormal entity, predictably called The Bell Witch.

Of course, The Bell Witch Haunting is a found footage movie, because what else would it be?  The fact that hardly any cast or crew is credited in this 2013 fright flick lends a little credence to the “it’s real” vibe, but who really falls for that in a post-The Blair Witch Project world, right?  Fool us once…The Bell Witch Haunting is waiting for you right here at Vudu.
