Basket Case (1982), courtesy Basket Case Productions.

Basket Case

Basket Case is about a young man who seeks revenge on the surgeons who separated him from his deformed Siamese twin brother whom he carries around with him in a basket.  Along his journey, he falls for the receptionist of one of the doctors and wants to live a clean life.  But his twin in the basket has other ideas.

This 1982 movie is a schlock classic from director Frank Henenlotter, full of iconic imagery and brilliant creature effects.  It’s a must-see movie, so if you haven’t, you can remedy that situation right here at TubiTV.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2014), courtesy 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a 2014 Spike Lee joint about an art curator who is cursed by an ancient artifact which gives him an insatiable appetite for blood.  He’s not really a vampire, though, and he gets involved in a dangerous love triangle with his wife and a anthropologist.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a stylized retelling of the seventies classic Ganja & Hess.  It’s more of a sensual love story thriller than a pure horror movie, but it is a clever twist on the tired old vampire motif.  Have a look at Da Sweet Blood of Jesus here at Vudu.

Spirit (2001), courtesy World International Network.

Spirit is about a young woman who moves to New Orleans with her father after the death of her mother.  She thinks that their new home is haunted, but her father doesn’t believe her.  So, she enlists the help of her paranormal investigator friend to get to the bottom of the story.

This 2001 spookfest is a TV movie, so it’s a pretty tame affair, but it’s a cool little supernatural thriller if you’re into the light stuff.  Elisabeth Moss stars as the daughter, Greg Evigan plays the father, and Austin O’Brien portrays the friend.  Check out Spirit here at Popcornflix.

Population 436 (2006), courtesy Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Population 436

Population 436 is about a census taker who is sent to a small town to investigate why it has had the exact same number of residents for the last 100 years.  As he snoops around, he discovers that there is much more to the town than its citizens want him to know.

This 2006 straight-to-video offering echoes the vibe of cult movies like The Wicker Man and Midsommar, but doesn’t do it nearly as creepily.  Still a fun watch, though.  Jeremy Sisto plays the census taker, and hey, that’s Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst as the town cop.  Catch Population 436 here at IMDB TV.

Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (1947), courtesy RKO Radio Pictures.

Dick Tracy Meets Grusome

Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome is about a gang of criminals, led by a fearsome con named Gruesome, who plan to rob a bank using a nerve gas that temporarily paralyzes anyone who breathes it.  Star detective Dick Tracy is called in to stop them.

This 1947 crime thriller is included with these horror movies for one reason – Gruesome is played by the legendary Boris Karloff.  Ralph Byrd portrays Dick Tracy, and Anne Gwynne shows up as his girlfriend, Tess Trueheart.  Watch Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome here at Popcornflix.
