What’s up, Tightwads! Another week has come and gone, and Tightwad Terror Tuesday is here with more free movies to entertain your eyeballs. So here they are…
The Faculty is about a high school where the students notice that their teachers have been acting strangely. But this isn’t just a case of teacher stress, though. The students discover that the educators have actually been infected by aliens who are bent on conquering the world.
Released in 1998, The Faculty is one of those star-studded teen horror flicks that simultaneously killed and saved the genre in the nineties. The who’s-who cast includes Jordana Brewster, Laura Harris, Josh Hartnett, Clea Duvall, Elijah Wood, Shawn Hatosy, and Usher as the students, and Bebe Neuwirth, Jon Stewart, Robert Patrick, Famke Janssen, and Piper Laurie as the teachers (and Salma Hayek as the school nurse). Meet The Faculty here at Vudu.
Starred Up is a 2013 movie about a teenage inmate who is moved to adult prison when he proves to be too unmanageable for the juvenile detention center. In his new facility, he comes across his father whom he has not seen since he was five years old. The father tries to talk some sense into his son before he winds up as a casualty of the violent prison system.
Although it’s got a heartfelt message, Starred Up is, at its root, a brutal prison movie. It was directed by David MacKenzie, who would go on to make the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water. Jack O’Connell plays the son, and Ben Mendelsohn plays the father. Check out Starred Up here at TubiTV.
In the seventies, disaster movies were all the rage. And in 1978, it was Avalanche’s turn to shine. Just as the title suggests, Avalanche is about a ski resort that is hit by a massive avalanche, turning the majestic winter wonderland into an icy struggle for survival.
Like many of the disaster movies of the time, Avalanche boasts an all-star cast which includes names like Rock Hudson, Mia Farrow, Jerry Douglas, and Robert Forster. This one was produced by none other than Roger Corman, and it shows. The fun stock footage of snowy destruction is the highlight here. Have a look at Avalanche here at ShoutFactoryTV.
Dead Body is about a group of recent high school graduates that goes away for a weekend of partying at a secluded cabin. They decide to play a game called Dead Body in which one of them pretends to be a killer. Unfortunately, someone takes the game too seriously, and the Dead Bodies start piling up.
This 2017 offering is a clever little fright flick. Of course, it has all the same clichés and tropes as any partying teenager/secluded location movie, but it’s a fun diversion, and it’s anything but typical. Catch Dead Body here at Popcornflix.
This is not the legendary 1968 Roman Polanski spookfest. This Rosemary’s Baby is the 2014 television mini-series. The story is essentially the same; it’s about a pregnant woman, of course named Rosemary, who believes that the neighbors in her luxury apartment building are members of a Satanic cult. And they want her baby.
Truthfully, this is not even in the same league as the original. Zoe Saldana plays a convincing enough Rosemary, but there’s no real starpower in the rest of the cast. It’s also a bit bloated, as its original broadcast stretched out over two nights. If you’re a big fan of the Ira Levin novel, or just curious about a different adaptation of it, you can find Rosemary’s Baby night one here, and night two here, both at IMDB Freedive.
