Willard (2003), courtesy New Line Cinema.

Willard is a 2003 remake of a classic 1971 movie about a socially awkward young man who forms a strange psychic connection to the rats that live in his invalid mother’s house.  He uses (and abuses) his power over the rats to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

This version of Willard is every bit as creepy as the original, thanks mostly to the committed performance of Crispin Glover in the title role.  Keep an eye out for R. Lee Ermey as well.  A word of warning to animal lovers; there’s a scene during which the rats do terrible things to a cute kitty cat.  You’ve been warned.  Get weirded out by Willard right here at Vudu.

Buried Alive (2007), courtesy FEARnet.

Buried Alive

Buried Alive is about five people who have been kidnapped and, yes, buried alive by their captor.  A friend of one of the victims who witnessed the abduction via a computer chat tries to unravel the mystery of the disappearances, learning that those buried all share a secret past.

This 2008 movie was culled together from a FearNet web mini-series, and at just a tad over an hour, it’s a short watch.  It’s also a found footage film with much of the story being told from the point of view of the buried people, so it winds up being the perfect length – it gets out before it gets old.  Spend an hour and change with Buried Alive here at Crackle.

Society (1989), courtesy Re-Animator Productions.

Society is about a rich teenage boy who lives a life of privilege, despite often feeling alienated from his family.  His feelings of not belonging are justified when he discovers a videotape of his family engaging in a murderous orgy.  As he digs deeper into the mystery, he opens a can of worms that would have been best left closed.

Directed by Brian Yuzna, this 1989 classic is one gooey schlockfest.  It’s not exactly A Serbian Film, but Society is not for the weak-stomached.  Judge for yourself right here at Kanopy.

The Terror Within (1989), courtesy Concorde Pictures.

The Terror Within

Also from 1989, The Terror Within is about a group of people that has survived a worldwide chemical apocalypse by hiding in an underground bunker.  While saving a fellow survivor from the outside, the group inadvertently lets in one of the mutant monsters that now populates the world, and has to subdue it before it kills everyone.

The Terror Within is a creative little creature feature.  It’s also got a great cast led by George Kennedy and Andrew Stevens.  If Sci-Fi monsters are your thing, you could do a lot worse.  Check out The Terror Within right here at Shout Factory TV.

The Last Days on Mars (2013), courtesy Canal+.

The Last Days on Mars

Just as the name suggests, The Last Days on Mars is about the final days of a scientific expedition on the planet Mars.  While preparing to go home, one of the scientists believes he has found evidence of life, and goes out to collect more specimens.  He vanishes, and one by one, so does the rest of the group.  Those left have to decide whether to try to find their crewmates, or just saving themselves and heading home without them.

The Last Days on Mars is a standard issue isolated space movie along the lines of Moon or The Martian, but with the added bonus of possible Martian monsters.  The incredible cast includes Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Olivia Williams, Elias Koteas, Johnny Harris, Goran Kostic, Tom Cullen, and Yusra Warsama.  Catch The Last Days on Mars here at TubiTV.
