Constantine (2005), courtesy Warner Bros.

Constantine

With John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum lighting up screens all over the country this past weekend, it’s as good a time as any to check out Keanu Reeves’ “other” action movie, Constantine.  In this 2005 supernatural thriller, Reeves plays the title character, a demon hunter who discovers a diabolical plot while investigating the apparent suicide of a police officer’s twin sister.

Constantine was based on a DC comic book created by the legendary Alan Moore.  Joining Reeves in the cast is Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, and Gavin Rossdale (yes, that Gavin Rossdale, the lead singer of Bush).  Check out Constantine here at IMDB Freedive.

Unsane (2018), courtesy Bleeker Street Media.

Unsane

Unsane is about a young woman who flees her hometown to avoid a stalker.  She goes to see a psychotherapist to help her cope with the stress, but finds herself accidentally committed to a mental institution.  To make matters worse, she believes that her stalker is one of the asylum’s workers.

This 2018 was director Steven Soderbergh’s experiment with shooting a feature completely on an iPhone.  And it looks like it; the whole thing has the visual appeal of a well-made YouTube video.  The story is stronger than the aesthetic, as is the cast, with big names like Claire Foy, Amy Irving, Juno Temple, Jay Pharoah, and Joshua Leonard.  If you’re looking for a dirty little lo-fi creepfest, you can find Unsane here at Kanopy.

Djinn (2013), courtesy Screen Media Films.

Djinn

Djinn is about an Arab couple that moves into a new luxury high-rise apartment.  They soon learn that the apartment building was constructed on a site that is home to a Djinn, or an evil genie.  The Djinn has also moved in with them.

If that sounds a bit like Poltergeist, well, it kind of is.  The Poltergeist connection is solidified by the fact that this 2013 spook flick was the last movie directed by master of horror Tobe Hooper before his untimely death.  Catch Djinn here at Popcornflix.

Tightwad Terror Tuesday for 5-21-19 – The Best Free Movies on the Web
Imperium (2016), courtesy Lionsgate Premiere.

Imperium

Imperium is a 2016 thriller about a young FBI agent who infiltrates a white supremacist organization that is believed to have terroristic intentions.  His undercover Nazi operation goes about as well as one would think it would.

It’s more of a crime drama than a horror movie, but Nazis in any capacity are scary.  Daniel Radcliffe plays the eager young agent, and Toni Collette and Tracy Letts show up in supporting roles.  Have a look at Imperium here at TubiTV.

The Jigsaw Murders (1989), courtesy Shout! Factory.

The Jigsaw Murders

No, The Jigsaw Murders is not a lost Saw movie.  It’s a 1989 semi-exploitation flick about a detective who is investigating a serial killer who preys upon erotic models.  The clock is ticking, though, because the detective’s daughter is one of these models, and she may be next on the murderer’s list.

The Jigsaw Murders is a standard action-oriented police procedural, with the same flawed characters and contrived plot points as the rest of them.  It’s a fun watch, but nothing that will be remembered for long.  Keep an eye out for Yaphet Kotto as a comically creepy coroner.  Solve The Jigsaw Murders here at ShoutFactoryTV.
