Event Horizon (1997), courtesy Paramount Pictures.

Event Horizon

Set in the year 2047, Event Horizon is about a search-and-rescue crew that is sent into deep space to answer a distress signal from a ship that disappeared years earlier.  Accompanying the crew is the inventor of the ship’s hyperdrive engine, a device which can bend space to allow for faster-than-light travel.  It also sends its subjects to horrible places, as the crew quickly learns once they board the craft.

Event Horizon was made in 1997, and it is easily one of the best movies of the nineties.  Think of it as Hellraiser in space.  The cast includes Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, and Jason Isaacs.  Event Horizon is a must-see movie, and you can see it here at Popcornflix.

The Sacrament (2013), courtesy Magnet Releasing.

The Sacrament

The Sacrament is a 2013 movie about a journalist whose sister joins a weird cult.  Along with two of his colleagues, the journalist goes to visit and hopefully talk some sense into her, but soon realizes that the group is far more dangerous than he initially realized.

Directed by Ti West, The Sacrament is loosely based on the Jonestown Massacre of the late seventies.  The cast includes the usual Ti West suspects like Joe Swanberg, A.J. Bowen, Amy Seimetz, and Kentucker Audley.  It’s a found footage movie, so if that’s not your thing you should steer clear.  Otherwise, you can find The Sacrament here at TubiTV.

Altered States (1980), courtesy Warner Bros.

Altered States

Altered States is about a professor who performs experiments with hallucinogenic drugs and isolation chambers on himself in order to attain an “Altered State” (so it’s not just a clever name).  When he succeeds, his friends and family grow concerned for his mental health.

This 1980 sci-fi/fantasy movie was written by the legendary Paddy Chayefsky and directed by the equally legendary Ken Russell.  The cast is anchored by a stellar performance from William Hurt, with Bob Balaban, Charles Haid, and Blair Brown in support.  A teeny little Drew Barrymore shows up, too.  Check out Altered States here at Vudu.

Twice Dead (1988), courtesy Concorde Pictures.

Twice Dead

Twice Dead is about a family that inherits an old mansion from a crazy actor.  When they go to check it out, they discover that the house has been taken over by a local gang.  They also have to deal with the fact that the old actor’s spirit is still hanging around the home, and he’s mad about the intrusion.

This movie is typical of its 1988 era.  Not too deep, but a lot of fun.  If you think you’ve seen everything that eighties horror has to offer, you may be pleasantly surprised by Twice Dead.  Catch it right here at ShoutFactoryTV.

The Haunted (1991), courtesy Fox Network.

The Haunted

This last week, famed paranormal researcher Lorraine Warren passed away at the age of 92.  Although her claims were sometimes dubious, there can be no doubt that the cases of her and her husband, Ed, have provided plenty of great horror movies, classics like The Amityville Horror and The Conjuring.

The Haunted is a 1991 television movie about one of the Warrens’ “other” cases.  Predictably, it’s about a family who enlists the help of the Warrens after they suspect that their new home may be haunted by spirits…or worse.  The Haunted is a fun and melodramatic TV movie that stars Sally Kirkland and Jeffrey DeMunn as the hapless couple, and Stephen Markle and Diane Baker as Ed and Lorraine Warren.  See The Haunted here at YouTube.
