The Haunting (1999), courtesy Dreamworks.

The Haunting

The Haunting is about three people who are summoned to a mansion for a sleep study.  What the doctor in charge of the experiment doesn’t tell them is that his intent is actually to study the effects of fear on his subjects, and the house itself has a sordid and haunted history.

This is the 1999 remake of the 1963 Robert Wise classic.  Both are based on the Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House, but Wise’s version has the subliminal chills and thrills while this remake has the big-name cast of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, and Owen Wilson.  Not as effective as the original, but worth a watch if you’re into slick remakes.  Check out The Haunting here at Crackle.

Blow Out (1981), courtesy Filmways Pictures.

Blow Out

Blow Out is about a movie soundman who, while out gathering audio effects for a new project, accidentally records a car accident.  When he listens back to the tape, he hears evidence that the fatal crash may have not been an accident.  This propels him down a rabbit hole of intrigue, conspiracy, and murder.

This 1981 thriller is a Brian De Palma movie, so it goes without saying that the plot is very Hitchcockian.  The cast includes John Travolta in the lead role, with Nancy Allen, John Lithgow, and Dennis Franz all in support.  If you haven’t seen Blow Out, fill in that hole in your De Palma viewing right here at TubiTV.

Willard (1971), courtesy Cinerama Releasing Corporation.

A few months back, Tightwad Terror Tuesday brought you the 2003 remake of Willard, and this week, we’ve got the original 1971 version.  The story is pretty much the same; a loner boy befriends a gang of rats that, in turn, does his nefarious bidding.

This Willard stars Bruce Davison in the Crispin Glover role, and features performances from Elsa Lanchester, Sondra Locke, and Ernest Borgnine.  It also features a whole lot of rats, which are real rats, not the CG swarms of the remake.  Have a look at Willard here at ShoutFactoryTV.

The Believers (1987), courtesy Orion Pictures.

The Believers

The Believers is about a psychiatrist who moves to New York with his son after the untimely death of his wife.  While assisting the NYPD in the investigation of a pair of murders, the doctor finds himself entangled with a voodoo cult that sets its sights on his son.

Made in 1987, The Believers was a breath of fresh air in a slasher-heavy decade.  Martin Sheen plays the psychiatrist, and the cast also includes Robert Loggia, Richard Masur, Jimmy Smits, and Helen Shaver.  Catch The Believers here at Vudu.

Lakeview Terrace (2008), courtesy Screen Gems/Sony Pictures Releasing.

Lakeview Terrace

Lakeview Terrace is a 2008 movie about an interracial couple that moves into a secure gated community in Los Angeles.  Unfortunately, their next-door neighbor is an African American man who does not approve of their relationship.  Even more unfortunately, the racist neighbor is also an LAPD officer who decides to torment the couple and make their lives hell.

Based on actual events, Lakeview Terrace is one of those movies that makes the viewer anxious because of the sheer helplessness of the lead characters.  Samuel L. Jackson is terrific as the rogue cop, and the hapless couple is portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington.  See Lakeview Terrace here at IMDB Freedive.
