Sleepy Hollow (1999), courtesy Paramount Pictures.

Sleepy Hollow

Just as one might suspect from the title, Sleepy Hollow is a retelling of the old Washington Irving tale about a fellow named Ichabod Crane who has an encounter with an entity called The Headless Horseman who, predictably, steals people’s heads while looking for his own.

This 1999 movie is a Tim Burton joint, so it’s very stylized, and a bit watered down (even though it’s still rated R).  Of course, because it’s Tim Burton, it stars Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane.  Also in the cast is Christina Ricci, Christopher Lee, Miranda Richardson, and Casper Van Dien.  Oh, yeah, and the Headless Horseman is awesomely portrayed by a combination of Christopher Walken and Ray Park.  Check out Sleepy Hollow here at Crackle.

Special Effects

Special Effects is a 1984 movie about a film director who murders an aspiring actress.  When the woman’s estranged husband is suspected of the crime, the director befriends the patsy with the intent of making a movie about the murder that he himself committed.

Special Effects was written and directed by Larry Cohen, but it may as well be a Brian De Palma movie for all of the Hitchcockian murder and mayhem in it.  Eric Bogosian stars as the director, and Zoë Lund plays the dead actress as well as the young woman cast to play her in the movie-within-the-movie.  Catch Special Effects here at Vudu.

Don’t Open Your Eyes (2018), courtesy Screen Media Films.

Don’t Open Your Eyes

Don’t Open Your Eyes is about a home nurse who gets a job as the caretaker of an elderly lady.  Unfortunately for him, the woman is not quite the sweet old lady that she seems to be, and her past has a dark connection to his own.

Made in 2018, Don’t Open Your Eyes is a creepy, yet flawed, low budget affair that makes the most of what it has.  If you don’t go into it expecting too much, you’ll probably have fun with it.  See it for yourself right here at Popcornflix.

Life After Beth (2014), courtesy A24.

Life After Beth

Life After Beth is a 2014 horror comedy about a young girl, named Beth, who dies unexpectedly of a snakebite.  Her boyfriend is crushed, but when he tries to console her parents, he discovers that Beth has risen from the grave.  But, of course, Beth is not the same girl she as was when she was alive.

Life After Beth is more comedy than horror, but it is technically a zombie movie, so we’re going to allow it.  The cast is first-rate comedic gold, including Aubrey Plaza as Beth, John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon as her parents, and Dane DeHaan as the boyfriend.  Cheryl Hines, Paul Reiser, and Anna Kendrick also show up to get in on the fun.  Laugh with Life After Beth here at Kanopy.

The Incantation (2018), courtesy House of Rose/Gravitas Ventures.

The Incantation

The Incantation is about a young American woman who travels to France to visit a castle that belongs to a distant relative.  Once there, she’s greeted by a strict vicar, a stoic chambermaid, and a pushy insurance salesman, all of whom seem bent on protecting the secrets of the grounds.  But she’s also haunted by the vision of a little girl who is trying to tell her something.

This 2018 spookfest is one of those movies that looks wonderful, and has its creepy moments, but suffers a bit from lazy writing and sterile performances from the actors (one of whom is none other than Superman himself Dean Cain).  If eerie estate movies like Burnt Offerings or The Legacy are your thing, you could do a whole lot worse.  You can find The Incantation here at Tubi TV.
