Under the Skin

Under the Skin is the craziest movie of 2013.  It’s about an humanoid alien, played by Scarlett Johansson, who cruises around in a box truck seducing and killing men on the streets of Scotland, all the while being followed by a mysterious protector on a motorcycle.

The backstory on this movie is almost as interesting as the movie itself, as director Jonathan Glazer outfitted a moving van with hidden cameras, stuck ScarJo in a wig, and let her drive around Scotland asking men for directions.  Those who played along were asked to shoot one final death scene and wound up in the movie.  Under the Skin is a philosophically disturbing movie that is full of dark and dreary imagery – basically, it’s like the last act of Annihilation stretched out to feature length.  Check out Under the Skin here at Kanopy.

Deep Red (1975), courtesy Howard Mahler Films.

Deep Red

Deep Red is about a psychic who determines that one of the attendees at her latest lecture is a murderer.  Of course, she is killed next, and a pianist who witnessed the crime teams up with a journalist to solve the murder before the killer strikes again.

This 1975 Dario Argento flick is a prototypical giallo slasher, full of haunting imagery and striking visuals.  It’s one of Argento’s more unsung movies, but its influence on modern horror is clear and obvious.  Find Deep Red here at Popcornflix.

Hellraiser: Judgement (2018), courtesy Dimension Films.

Hellraiser: Judgement

Hellraiser: Judgement is the latest installment in the juggernaut Hellraiser series.  It’s about a pair of detectives who are tracking a serial killer, but because it’s a Hellraiser movie, we already know that the case goes much deeper than that.

There are diminishing returns on the Hellraiser franchise, so with Hellraiser: Judgement being the 2018 entry, it’s pretty mediocre.  Oh, and there’s no Doug Bradley as Pinhead.  Big fans of the series should still find some entertainment value in it.  Maybe.  Or maybe not.  See for yourself here at Vudu.

Mary Loss of Soul

Mary Loss of Soul is a 2014 movie about a girl named Mary who, well, loses her soul.  The teenager turns up missing from her family, and when she returns, she’s not quite whole.  Her family has to figure out how to get her soul back.

Mary Loss of Soul is better than that synopsis makes it sound, but not much.  It’s an entertaining little spookfest, more of a children’s gateway horror movie than a full-on fright flick.  If tame turns you on, catch Mary Loss of Soul here at TubiTV.

The Truth About Emanuel (2013), courtesy Well Go USA Entertainment.

The Truth About Emanuel

The Truth About Emanuel is about a young woman, Emanuel, who grieves because her mother died while giving birth to her.  When a woman moves in who bears a striking resemblance to Emanuel’s dead mother, the girl becomes infatuated with her new neighbor and her infant child.

This 2013 thriller is a fun little ghostly mystery.  There aren’t many big-time scares in it, but it’s creepy enough to keep a horror fan’s attention.  Kaya Scodelario stars in the title role, while Jessica Biel shows up as the neighbor.  Watch The Truth About Emanuel here at YouTube’s Movie Channel.
