What’s happening, Tightwads? How are your 31 days of Halloween lists going? Maybe we can help you check a couple off with this list of free movies, from iHorror to your eyeholes…
Amityville II: The Possession
The Amityville Horror franchise is one of the most prolific and confusing in all of horrordom. For the most part, they get progressively worse, which means that Amityville II: The Possession is the second best in the series. It’s about a teenage son who becomes possessed by an evil entity after his family moves into the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue.
Amityville II: The Possession is technically a prequel to the original The Amityville Horror, but it’s not about the DeFeo murders that haunted the Lutzes (that movie, The Amityville Murders, hits later this year). So, this family lived in the house in between the two? Who knows. This 1982 offering was made before filmmakers everywhere pulled an Asylum and realized that anyone could make a movie and stick the word “Amityville” in the title, so for what it’s worth, it’s pretty good. White Bird in a Blizzard
White Bird in a Blizzard is a 2014 movie about a teenage girl who is dealing with the mysterious disappearance of her mother. Following a series of strange recurring dreams, the girl goes on a search for answers, which leads her down a rabbit hole of lies, betrayals, and possibly, even murder.
More mystery than horror film, White Bird in a Blizzard was directed by hipster filmmaker Gregg Araki, the same guy behind The Doom Generation, The Living End, and Mysterious Skin. The stellar cast includes Shailene Woodley, Christopher Meloni, Eva Green, Angela Bassett, Mark Indelicato, and Shiloh Fernandez. Discover the secret of White Bird in a Blizzard right here at TubiTV.
Battle Los Angeles
Battle Los Angeles is, predictably, about an alien invasion that has landed on Earth, with one of the impact points being Los Angeles. An elite squad of marines is sent in to rescue a group of civilians who are stranded inside alien territory before the government blasts the entire area.
This 2011 big-budget blockbuster is one of those movies that probably looked good on paper, but makes its audience wonder how it got made in the first place once they see it. It’s got an impressive cast which includes Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena, Ramon Rodriquez, Will Rothhaar, and Bridget Moynahan, and as a movie, it looks and sounds good, but it’s really nothing special. Just another apocalyptic disaster movie. See Battle Los Angeles for yourself here at Crackle.
Private Property is a 1960 noir thriller about two hoodlums who set their sights on a beautiful young socialite who lives in the Los Angeles hills. The pair sets up shop in an abandoned house next door, and they proceed to stalk the woman from their close vantage point. But the woman is not quite the victim that they think she is.
Part home invasion movie and part seductive thriller, Private Property was considered a lost film for decades before a print was found and restored by the UCLA Television and Film Archive. This is that print. Private Property is pure film noir, right down to the alluring camera work and bombastic film score. Catch Private Property here at Kanopy.
Last week, Tightwad Terror Tuesday brought you Hammer House of Horror at Shout Factory TV. This week, we’ve got Thriller, another British anthology television series, also at Shout Factory TV. These self-contained episodes feature tight spooky stories that deal with everything from psycho killers to vengeful ghosts.
Thriller ran for six seasons between 1973 and 1976, and every episode from each one of them is included. Like any anthology, some segments are better than others, but they’re all worth a look, so if you’ve been searching for something new to binge, you’ve found it.
