Thanksgiving is almost here, and while there aren’t a whole lot of horror movies about Turkey Day, there are a few. Let’s all be thankful that they can be seen for free on the internet.
Home Sweet Home
Our own Andrew Peters wrote a much more in-depth piece about Home Sweet Home right here, but the basic premise of this 1981 slasher is that Jake Steinfeld (the “Body by Jake” guy) plays an escaped mental patient who goes on a PCP trip and targets a family on thanksgiving. It’s a silly little offering, but it’s worth a chuckle or two. Steinfeld, whose character is known only as “Killer,” seems on the verge of cracking up for the entire film, and a silly mime-like kid runs around playing a guitar until his inevitable (and satisfying) demise. A very young Vinessa Shaw (The Hills Have Eyes) is in it, as well. Check it out on YouTube.
There isn’t much to say about ThanKskilling that can’t be summed up by its tagline: Gobble, Gobble, [email protected]#%er! The movie is about a killer turkey, appropriately named Turkie, who murders a bunch of college kids over Thanksgiving break. If you’re looking for a serious horror film, keep looking; ThanksKilling is as ludicrous as movies come. Don’t believe me? IHorror’s Eric Endres made a list of the 10 Most WTF Moments from ThanksKilling that pretty much sums up the whole film – it’s right here. As if that wasn’t enough, Timothy Rawles interviewed the director of the 2009 film, Jordan Downey, right here. Now that you’ve got all of that reading out of the way, what are you waiting for? Watch ThanksKilling now, right here on Popcornflix.
ThanksKilling 3 is the 2012 sequel to ThanksKilling. Don’t look for a ThanksKilling 2, it doesn’t exist. It’s explained better in the movie, but basically ThanksKilling 3 is Turkie trying to track down the last remaining copy of ThanksKilling 2. This movie is even stranger that its predecessor, but the poster does promise “boobs in the first second,” so you know that it’s every bit as exploitative. ThanksKilling 3 was crowdfunded, and it’s considered to be the most successful Kickstarter horror movie of all time (so far), raising over $100,000 for production from fans of the first movie. Blood Rage is about a pair of twins, one good and one evil. When they were young, the evil one committed a murder and blamed it on the good one, so the good one was sent to a mental institution. Years later, on Thanksgiving of course, the good one escapes from the hospital, giving the evil one an excuse to do more killing. Did you get all that? This 1987 slasher is better than Home Sweet Home, but that’s not saying much. Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize Ted Raimi in a cameo as a condom salesman. Blood Rage can be seen here on YouTube.
Even though Blood Freak actually has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, it is still considered a Thanksgiving movie for some reason – maybe because the killer wears a big bird head. The film is about a biker who helps a damsel in distress on the side of the road and ends up at a drug party. On a drug trip, the biker is turned into a giant bird who hunts and kills dealers. It’s a really strange movie. It’s an “I can do that” type of movie, with the writers/directors also starring in the film. Extra props for the use of an actual amputee as an actor in a scene where a victim has his leg cut off by a table saw. The bird-killer looks more like the mascot for the Philadelphia Eagles than a turkey, but make no mistake; he means business. This fun 1972 gore-fest has to be seen to be believed.
