Fangs of the Living Dead
With the recent passing of Anita Ekberg, it seems only fitting to kick things off with one of her movies. Fangs of the Living Dead (also known as Malenka) stars Ekberg as a famous model from Rome who inherits a castle in a remote part of Italy. When she arrives at the site, she finds her Uncle and his harem of vampires there. As her only living relative, her Uncle wants to take the opportunity to transform her into a bloodsucker as well. This 1969 film is typical Eurohorror, more fun than scary, with melodrama and overacting at every turn. As flawed as it is, it’s still a better vampire movie than any of the Twilight saga flicks. The Descent is about a group of spelunkers who sets out to explore a deep cave. Once they are deep into the earth, they discover that they are not alone down there. Directed by the action-centric Neil Marshall in 2005, The Descent is often thought of as a kick-ass feminist horror movie because the caving team are all women, but the fact is this; women protagonists or not, The Descent is an awesome monster movie. It’s suspenseful, exciting, and downright scary. Dig in righton Hulu.
Creature from the Black Lagoon
This is one that every self-respecting horror fan should see at least once. Coming out in 1954, Creature from the Black Lagoon was one of the later Universal Monster movies. It also happens to be one of the most influential movies of all time, and a pop-culture favorite as well. Fun Fact: The Gill-Man, or Creech as he has come to be called by fans, was played by diver/stuntman Ricou Browning, who went on to create the television show Flipper. Enough trivia – if you haven’t seen Creature from the Black Lagoon, or if you just want a refresher, head on over here to Snagfilms and click play.
Not to be confused with the Angelina Jolie movie from 2008, The Changeling is one of the most legitimately scary ghost movies ever shot. Made in 1980, the film is about a musician who loses his family in a freak automobile accident and tries to get a fresh start by moving into a big gothic mansion by himself. Of course, the mansion is haunted by the spirit of a young crippled boy. Moody and atmospheric, The Changeling is a slow-burn creepfest along the lines of The Haunting or The Innocents. George C. Scott plays the lead role in typically convincing fashion. Get spooked out by The Changeling here on Youtube.
I Spit on Your Grave 2
I Spit on Your Grave 2 is the 2013 sequel to the 2010 remake of the classic 1978 revenge film I Spit on Your Grave. Anyone who has followed that trail of celluloid knows what to expect from this movie; it’s more of the same. A young aspiring model naively accepts an offer for a free photo session and is assaulted, raped, and left for dead. She escapes from her captors and takes her revenge. In all honesty, I Spit on Your Grave 2 would be a pretty damn good movie if the cinematic climate wasn’t oversaturated by torture porn and rape-revenge movies. If you’re into that subgenre, you could do a lot worse than this flick. Check it outon Hulu.
