There’s a lot of confusion on the web about whether or not the Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus” will be getting a remake. After digging through web articles, Instagram posts, and twitter feeds it looks like the answer is YES!
However, it’s not the remake we were wanting, or even need for that point. I think the remake is summed up perfectly by the main witch herself, Bette Midler.
“I know it’s cheap,” she said. “It’s going to be cheap!
She’s not wrong. The remake is looking to be just a TV movie and not including any of the original cast. There might be a quick cameo from characters in the original but even that’s doubtful. This looks to be just a cash grab. They’re taking a Halloween classic and trying to figure out how to make a few more bucks off of it.
Putting on my “marketing hat”, I’m guessing this will be released on Disney’s new subscription streaming service coming soon. I’m not completely opposed to remakes. For example, Stephen King’s IT was a wonderful remake in my opinion. However, this one is hard for any of the original fans to wrap their heads around.
Bette continued that her portrayal of Winifred Sanderson was an iconic role she helped create. Noting that it wouldn’t be so easily reproducible.
“I’m not sure what they’re going to do with my character. My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that,” she said.
So yes, there is another Hocus Pocus coming.
But no, it’s not one we want.
