After a long six months without AMC’s The Walking Dead in our lives, the show returns in just over a week, the premiere episode of the long awaited fourth season shambling its way onto our television sets on October 13th.  If you simply cannot wait another second longer to jump back into the Walking Dead universe, the good news is that you don’t have to.  Because the show has made a return a couple weeks early, in the form of a brand spankin’ new web series!

Though the Walking Dead TV series primarily puts the focus on characters like Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon, the potential for expanding upon the world presented in the show is huge.  AMC of course realizes this, and for the past couple years they’ve been bridging the gap between seasons with web series’, which are essentially mini episodes of the show that put the attention on other characters trying to survive during the zombie apocalypse.  A pretty cool idea, one that gives us diehard fans something to tide us over until Rick and the gang return into our lives.

The award-winning webisodes returned to AMC’s website this past Sunday night,  with a three part series called The Oath.  Conceived and directed by the show’s executive producer and special makeup effects designer Greg Nicotero, the three segments are each 7-10 minutes long, and in them we meet the characters Paul (Wyatt Russell) and Karina (Ashley Bell), who find their camp ravaged and overrun by a horde of hungry walkers.  As we all know, evading walkers is easier said than done, a task that’s made a whole lot harder for the two because Paul’s life is quickly slipping way, the result of a pretty nasty gash on his side.  He claims the cut wasn’t the result of a walker attack, but the fact remains that no matter how he got the cut, he’s going to turn if he dies.  As we learned at the end of Season 2, everyone in the world of the Walking Dead is infected, and will get hungry for brains and guts regardless of how they meet their demise.

The web series follows around Paul and Karina in their desperate search to find medical supplies, and you’ll be pleased to find that the segments are as high quality as any given episode of the real show.  “There’s walkers, gore and new threats lurking around every turn – all of the elements that fans of The Walking Dead will love!,” says Nicotero, who also directed Season 4’s premiere episode.  He speaks the truth, and you can see for yourself by checking out all three episodes of the new series below, which should sate your appetite for gory zombie carnage until the big return on October 13th.  Without spoiling anything, I can promise that you’ll get a real kick out of the note the web series ends on.

Dig in, fellow Dead-Heads!

Last month AMC announced that they’re soon going to be expanding the Walking Dead universe even further, with a spin-off TV series that’s set to launch in 2015.  It’s a hell of a good time to be a zombie fan, that’s for sure!
