First, game developer Team17 had gamers escape from prison in “The Escapists,” now they are mashing worlds together with “The Walking Dead” comic series in order to make prison more terrifying than it already was.

“The Escapists” was a top-down 8-bit game that put you in the shoes of a prison inmate and had you walk around prison daily life while forming an escape plan on the side. There were a variety of ways you could escape from prison. Depending on what kind of gamer you are, you might choose to dig your way out or walk out the front gate dressed as a guard. The monotony of daily prison life also played a part as you worked in the yard, ate in the chow hall and attempted to remain un-penetrated in the showers.

This time around you take the role of Rick Grimes. The first episode is reported to have Grimes wake up in a hospital and  immediately has to face zombies. It is up to the player to craft items and gather supplies in order to escape the hospital and survive.

The release describes the “The Escapists: The Walking Dead” as:

“In this unique game, recreated entirely in the charming 8-bit pixel art style of The Escapists, Rick is in charge of a band of survivors featuring many of the original comic book cast. He must secure the safety of the group by seeking out a safe escape route from each area, and manage several dangerous tasks to keep as many of the group alive as possible. The game faithfully matches the timeline of the comics and so as the player makes progress in the game they play through locations that mirror the progress of the band of the survivors taken from the award-winning comic’s epic story.”

From the short game trailer, it looks like later down the line you will end up in THE prison and use your skills to fend off zombies and survive with your group.

Looks like this series will keep closer to the comic book material, as opposed to the AMC television show material. The idea of playing an 8-bit zombie games with the same unique gameplay that the “The Escapists” had is very exciting.

There is a rough release slated for later this summer on both Xbox and PC.
