USA Network/SYFY have unleashed the debut trailer for their upcoming The Purge TV series based on the film franchise. The TV series trailer arrived just in time before The First Purge prequel film hits theaters on July 4th. Franchise creator James DeMonaco is taking the reigns as writer, director, and executive producer for the TV series.
The show will be a 10 episode event, which Jason Blum previously said would focus on how The Purge effects the other 364 days of the year. However, DeMonaco later clarified there would be plenty of “night-of” mayhem, which the trailer appears to show. We covered more details on how DeMonaco plans to approach the series here.
Actress Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky) is set to take a lead role.According to Deadline, Dourif will play a “much-adored charismatic cult leader, dispensing blessings to her fawning followers”. She will be joined by Lili Simmons, Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Hannah Anderson, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell, and Lee Tergesen.
The aesthetic transition from the big to small screen looks to be pretty seamless. DeMonaco appears to be giving fans all the chaos and (im)moral conflicts they’ve come to expect from the franchise. Masked freaks rule the night, and the streets are bathed in neon, blood, and bodies.
It could be interesting seeing more backstory for the characters from different parts of the year so we can understand what motivates their dastardly deeds on Purge night. The Purge TV series will arrive on USA Network September 4th, 2018.
