‘The Predator’ Will Officially Invade the Suburban Jungle

by Eric Panico

Twentieth Century Fox has finally announced the official plot synopsis for The Predator! It seems Shane Black and Fred Dekker have thrown the playbook out the window, bringing us the iconic monster like you’ve never seen it before. Say goodbye to the lush and concrete jungles. The Predator is “coming home.”

Here is the plot synopsis from Twentieth Century Fox:

“From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

On paper, this could definitely be the premise of a B-movie. But here’s the rub: Predator (1987) was itself a B-movie with A-movie execution.

In fact, many of the best sci-fi/horror films ever made, like The Terminator, Jaws, and Alien, took a B-movie premise and elevated it to legendary status. A film like The Terminator, which is about a time traveling robot trying to kill the unborn child of a diner waitress to stop the future rebellion, is hard to visualize favorably in a written summary. However, in the right hands, these movies often thrive.

Black could do some wild things with this kind of sandbox. The plot synopsis promises the Predator like we’ve never seen him before, a new, high-risk setting to shake things up, and a team of badasses brought to us by Shane Black, who is a master at character writing and dark humor. It’s refreshing to see they aren’t just doing a by the numbers remake of the original.

A trailer is said to be releasing at CinemaCon, which Twentieth Century Fox is giving a presentation at today. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before it drops online in the weeks following the event. The Predator will hunt again on the big screen September 14, 2018.
