Recently, I realized as I post about films I have seen at Fantastic Fest that each year the majority of my favorite films were screened there. This one is no different. In fact, next to Paul Verhoeven’s ‘Elle,’ this was my favorite movie of the fest.
Justine is a strict vegetarian, attending veterinary school in France. During one of the intense hazing rituals, she is forced to eat meat. The experience combined with angst, begins to spin her down a spiral of debauchery, sexual awakening and a taste for human flesh.
The film works on a staggering amount of levels both existential and otherwise. It takes care to exist between drama and horror. The finished product is one that takes you down the same terrifying path that Justine travels.
Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At sixteen she’s a brilliant student starting out at veterinary school where she experiences a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her family principles and eats raw meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge.
The red band trailer does a fantastic job of giving you a glimpse, without revealing too much. This is just your appetizer. Your full bloody entree awaits when Raw hits theaters March 10.
