The Crooked Man and The Nun both made their debut appearances in The Conjuring 2. Unsurprisingly, the fan-favorite Nun became the first spin off based on The Conjuring 2, and has scored the most successful opening of the whole Conjuring franchise.

The Nun scared up $131 million on its opening weekend. It is now the highest-grossing Conjuring film worldwide, raising the bar for her creepy counterpart, The Crooked Man.

So who is this Crooked Man, anyway? Where does he come from? Why is he so damn crooked?

The origins of the character of the Crooked Man are sparse, dating back to a nursery rhyme from 1842:

“There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. And they all lived together in a little crooked house.”

Sounds innocent enough, right? It’s even been turned into a children’s picture book.

But, which that’s a little bit odd, it’s not a lot to go on if you’re looking for maximum scares. So, the writers from The Conjuring 2 took the liberty of adding another verse.

“The crooked man stepped forth and rang the crooked bell and thus his crooked soul spiraled into a crooked Hell, murdered his crooked family and laughed a crooked laugh.”

Well that’s much more sinister.

While The Conjuring’s version of the Crooked Man is a new creepy face to fear, this actually won’t be the character’s first appearance within the genre.

In 2016, the Crooked Man was the titular character in the straight-to-TV movie, Crooked Man. How do we know it’s the same Crooked Man, you ask?

In this TV movie, he is summoned by singing – you guessed it – the classic nursery rhyme. Once the song is sung, the Crooked Man appears to stalk and kill everyone in the vicinity.

With The Conjuring 3, Annabelle 3, and The Crooked Man all confirmed to join The Conjuring franchise, fans of the series have a lot to be excited about.

Will The Crooked Man top The Nun as the top series spin off? Or will he just be a bootleg Slenderman? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
