It’s no secret that the film was a bomb – reviews were not kind to the film and neither were the box office numbers. Yet maybe these deleted scenes and the alternate ending could change audience reactions to Black Christmas.
Or maybe not. Even the Amazon reviews on the site are pretty harsh on the film. It would seem that a lot of viewers simply did not want yet another update to a film widely regarded as a classic by just about everyone.
But I’ll go out on a limb and say that, while not everyone is guilty of this, a lot of complaints have been that Sophia Takal’s take on the film deviated too far from being a “fun slasher.” Yet if you go back and revisit the 1974 version, you’ll see that the original is anything but; it’s got a little more depth and it’s more perverse than many 80s slashers that came after it.
The horror world might just not have been ready for another take on the film. Or maybe I’m just being too optimistic.
If you’ve seen it, what do you think? Will you be buying the Blu-Ray? Or are you trying to forget the film as soon as possible? For those who enjoyed it, I’d love to hear why, as the majority of reactions have been quite sour.
