Netflix has signed the dotted line on a new adaptation of The 39 Steps. The classic thriller, famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935, will star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Edward Berger (The Terror) is set to direct the limited series which will be adapted from John Buchan’s original novel of the same title by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant).
The 39 Steps is a conspiracy thriller that centers on Richard Hannay (Cumberbatch) who becomes an unwilling pawn in a global conspiracy to reset the world order. There are 39 steps to changing the world and only Hannay stands in the way of its completion. According to Deadline, the series will update the events of the book for a more modern and scarily relevant setting.
Buchan’s book has been adapted into numerous films, radio plays, a video game, and at least one long-running play since it was first published 1915.
The series is being produced by Anonymous Content, Chapter One Productions, and Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch Productions alongside his producing partner Adam Ackland.
It will be interesting to see what this new iteration of The 39 Steps looks like as a series.
