One of the many films celebrating a big anniversary this year is the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which turns the ripe old age of 40. As we told you about here on iHorror a few months back, Tobe Hooper’s classic was released back into limited theaters last month, boasting a brand new never-before-seen 4K transfer.
If the theatrical revival didn’t come to your neck of the woods, have no fear, because the new transfer is coming to Blu-ray just in time for Halloween!
Though Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released on Blu-ray a few years back, Dark Sky is looking to get you to double dip on their upcoming 40th Anniversary Blu-ray, slated to hit shelves on September 16th. Both a 1-disc version and a 2-disc version are going to be available, with no special features yet announced.
We do know that both will feature the same transfer seen on the big screen last month, sourced from the original 16mm film that the movie was shot on.
What’s most interesting about the 40th Anniversary release is that there is apparently going to also be a $69.99 limited ‘Black Maria’ edition, which according to Amazon will be released one month after the regular versions, on October 14th.
Black Maria is the name of the 18-wheeler seen at the very end of the film, which leads me to believe that the discs are going to be packaged inside a replica of the vehicle. A strange decision, to say the very least.
Of course, that assumption is purely speculation since no details have been revealed, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted as we learn more!
