Take a First Person Dive into Horror with Alexandre Aja’s ‘Campfire Creepers’ VR

by Sam Angelo

Horror is now finding its spot at the campfire in the VR market with a new anthology series by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes [2006], Piranha 3D, and Mirrors) titled Campfire Creepers. Aja has also recruited the help of producers Casey Cooper Johnson (Zana) and Martin Andersen (Urban Nightmares and ABC’s of Death: K is for Klutz).

The series will bring an immersive watchable experience to viewers as they strap in for some creepy campfire stories. In a comment to Variety, Aja noted: “We could have made something that was really traumatizing”, but chose to create a more approachable and “comfortable type of awe” that, according to Variety, “plays with the tropes of the genre without any explicit gore”.

The synopsis of the series is described as:

An original anthology series that brings classic campfire stories to life in stunning Virtual Reality, Campfire Creepers invites viewers to join the fire circle at a summer camp called Camp Coyote as a group of kids take turns telling spooky tales. Inspired by cult classics like Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt, every episode of Campfire Creepers is a wild ride that will have you laughing and screaming in equal measure.

Personally, the plot sounds interesting since it entertains the concept of crossing the premise of the main influences with the old Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark?

While it has not been disclosed as to how many episode will be in the first season, episode one and two of the series (the first released October 2017 in Spain for the Sitges Film Festival) are titled The Skull of Sam and Midnight MarchCampfire Creepers’ first episode will star Robert Englund, and is produced by Future Lighthouse and Oculus VR.

In the mean time, Aja has released a poster of the series with an accompanying trailer that teases an assortment of promising horrors.

Robert Englund is not the only horror legend making a big comeback. Michael Carpenter’s Halloween just received a new poster, which you can get a look in the our article here.
