Writer/director/actor Taika Waititi is putting his own spin of the creepy Roald Dahl classic James and the Giant Peach with the help of an all-star cast for the official Roald Dahl YouTube Channel in an effort to raise money for charity.
The reading will specifically benefit Partners in Health, a medical organization on the frontlines in the fight against Covid-19 supporting medical health assistance in vulnerable communities.
The reading will take place over 10 episodes with new episodes released on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning today!
Waititi is joined by Chris Hemsworth, Liam Hemsworth, Nick Kroll, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Meryl Streep, Billy Porter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Lupita Nyong’o, Ryan Reynolds and more to bring Dahl’s classic tale to life.
“Being an adult child myself and having read James and the Giant Peach to my girls multiple times, I’m excited to be able to partner with my friends, the Dahl team and Partners in Health and re-tell this story to help those most in need right now,” said Waititi to The Hollywood Reporter. “This wacky, wonderful tale is about resilience in children, triumph over adversity and dealing with a sense of isolation which couldn’t been more relevant today.”
Waititi began the reading with the Hemsworth brothers providing the voices of James’s terrifying aunts Sponge and Spiker while Kroll joined them to voice the mysterious old man who gives James the magical crocodile tongues that will begin his amazing adventure.
The videos are free to watch, and after having watched the first myself, they’re perfect for the whole family!
