The trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s period horror Crimson Peak was leaked online recently. Being a fan of Guillermo Del Toro to say I am excited to see what he does with this interesting concept is an understatement. The horror scene in Hollywood has gotten very stale and formulaic at the moment, it seems the big horror movie releases lately have been the same boring, lackluster, generic crap. Release after release of movies about the haunting of a family, I’m not saying that a ghost or demon terrorising a family can’t be good a number of movies have done fantastically well with this basic premise. However, it seems the films that have used this basic plot outline of late have been completely lacking in creative flair or imagination.
Despite all of these kinds of movies being the same, audiences seem to lap it up, The Conjuring and Annabelle were very successful despite utilising tried and tested scares that can’t really be called scares. That being said it is refreshing to see someone like Guillermo Del Toro get a big budget and the permission to run wild with his imagination. Del Toro is not only a genius storyteller but also a master at bringing to life terrifying and awe-inspiring creations from the depths of his imagination. These fantasy scenarios always click on-screen, the guy is a genius. Which is why it’s exciting that Crimson Peak includes all of the oddities as well as his vision of just one of the universes inside his creative mind. Crimson Peak doesn’t just have poltergeist and ghost girls knocking things over in a suburban house, it has twisted skeletal undead entities clawing out of the ground in a grand old mansion with infinite secrets. The footage in this trailer makes me very excited for Del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novel: At The Mountains Of Madness. Are you looking forward to Crimson Peak? Does this trailer make you confident for Del Toro tackling Lovecraft? Let me know in the comments section below.
