Stephen King is on a roll again! As most of us in the horror circle know, King is notorious for handing out recommendations in a somewhat willy-nilly manner. On one hand, back in the day he said “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” thereby endorsing one of the great horror authors of our time. But, King has also recommended a ton of stuff that really isn’t great.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, King was asked for Halloween recommendations and at the tippity-top of that list he dropped a recommend for the Child’s Play remake.
King said, “I didn’t go see it in the theaters, because I thought, ‘Well, this is just another warmed-over sequel.’ Mark Hamill does the voice of Chucky and I just f—ing loved that movie. I laughed and I cried at the things in there. Everybody who’s in the movie does a terrific job. It’s a smart script and it’s just a load of fun. It really is. It’s gruesome as hell. There’s this scene where this guy is [laughs] hanging some Christmas lights on his house, and Chucky does something to the ladder, and he falls off and he lands on his feet, and his bones come right out the side [now convulsing with laughter] of his legs. And you know, it’s not funny, but at the same time it is funny.”
Child’s Play had plenty of folks who loved it but it was also met with a lot of hate on release. Lars Klevberg’s take on the Buddi doll saw it join the age of tech and used that to further the Buddi doll for a new age.
King also went on to recommend both Netflix’s Marianne and Leigh Bardugo’s book, Ninth House.
