If you’re a child of the 80s or even 90s, your nightmares might have been touched by Alvin Schwartz’s grim and terrifying short horror story and urban legend collection Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Now those horror stories might come back to bite you in the ass as Deadline reports Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan have just sold a pitch to CBS Films to adapt that very book. However, the film adaptation doesn’t sound nearly as terrifying as the book seemed to be as a child. The story will follow a group of outcast kids who stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life. Read on!

Scary Stories to tell in the dark movie

The original book featured a variety of stories including, “skeletons with torn and tangled flesh who roam the earth; a ghost who takes revenge on her murderer; and a haunted house where every night a bloody head falls down the chimney.” Since the original 1981 book spawned two sequels, More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones (1991), it’s not clear if stories from all the books will be used as inspiration. Either way, we wish this were a horror anthology film instead of a singular story bringing all the terrors together. What made these stories truly scary were the original illustrations (see above), and we hope those scary drawings inform the production design. Sound good?
