Back in May, Lionsgate announced that a new Saw film was in the works, to be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, helmer of Saw II, III, and IV. Surprisingly enough though, the reboot was set to be executive produced by and star comedian Chris Rock.
As acclaimed a comic and movie star as Rock is, he has no history in horror films, and rarely plays dramatic roles. Yet, this new Saw movie is intended to be a straight-up entry in the franchise, and by no means a turn into the realm of horror/comedy.
Now, The Wrap is reporting some new details on Rock’s Saw reboot, including the casting of A-list Marvel Cinematic Universe superstar Samuel L. Jackson as the father of Rock’s character, a police detective investigating a series of shocking crimes.
Additionally, The Handmaid’s Tale’s Max Minghella will play Rock’s partner on the police force, and Riverdale’s Marisol Nichols will play Rock’s boss, the police captain. The film itself currently remains untitled, despite production now being well underway.
Where things still remain unclear is the matter of whether or not Rock’s Saw will connect at all to the previous films. It’s being called a reboot in press materials, but so was 2017’s Jigsaw, which ended up firmly residing within the original continuity.
