With all the great horror and horror-adjacent shows currently strewn across the broadcast, cable, and streaming TV landscapes, I wouldn’t blame you if you missed out on watching season 1 of Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet.

After all, the marketing didn’t really play up its horror genre status, instead focusing on the wacky comedy. While Santa Clarita Diet is most definitely a wacky comedy, it’s also most definitely a horror show, one packed with blood, guts, gore, and dark humor.

For those unfamiliar, Santa Clarita Diet premiered in early 2017, and stars Drew Barrymore as Sheila Hammond, a married realtor who dies and then returns as a zombie for reasons still not entirely clear.

Unable to turn his back on his now zombified wife, Sheila’s husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) resolves to do whatever it takes to keep his family together, murder included. Also swept up in this is their sarcastic daughter Abby (Liv Hewson).

As a member of the undead, Sheila craves human flesh, and being a good provider, Joel does whatever he can to ensure her survival. Unfortunately, Sheila finds her urges harder and harder to keep in check, potentially endangering those she loves.

Now, Deadline reports that Santa Clarita Diet season 2 will premiere on Netflix on March 23rd. If you haven’t checked out the show, you really should, as it’s both quite funny and very creative.
