A few weeks back, it was confirmed that – to the surprise of horror fans everywhere – genre icon Robert Englund would soon reprise the role of Freddy Krueger for a special Halloween episode of ABC’s 80s-set sitcom The Goldbergs. The episode in question airs Wednesday.

Englund last played Freddy onscreen in 2003’s blockbuster crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and was eventually replaced by Jackie Earle Haley for 2010’s Nightmare on Elm Street remake. In the years since, Englund has said he had no plans or desire to return to his signature role.

Clearly, that stance has changed, as fans will see in just two short days. However, from the moment this sitcom gig was announced, diehard Freddy devotees have been openly wondering if it could lead to Englund starring in another Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

Well, it turns out that wish might be granted. During a recent chat with Access Online, Englund teased that he “might have one left in me” when asked about the future of the Elm Street franchise. That said, he made it clear that he’s not up for making any sequels to that project.

So, with Englund’s openness to the idea public, the ball is now in Warner Bros./New Line’s court. Considering the massive success of Halloween’s Jamie Lee Curtis-led reboot, it’s likely a new Nightmare with Robert Englund would prove to be just as financially successful.
